Congratulations on the Day of Slavic Literature and Culture
Annually 24 May, on the day of commemoration of Saints Cyril and Methodius, Ukrainians, along with all other Slavic peoples, celebrate the Day of Slavic Literature and Culture. This holiday symbolizes the civilizational triumph of Slavdom, its national identity, unites society and connects each of us to the invaluable cultural heritage.
According to various historical sources, the outstanding Byzantine educators Cyril and Methodius gave an impetus to the development of East Slavic writing, translating liturgical books and the Gospel into Church Slavonic, opening schools at churches. They also organized the Slavic alphabet, laid the foundation for further improvement of the Cyrillic alphabet, which as a national alphabet is used today by more than 250 million. people and which became the third official alphabet of the European Union after Latin and Greek writing.
The achievements of equal apostles Cyril and Methodius became that cultural foundation, from which Christianity spread.
Honoring the memory of the founders of Slavic writing and literature has a long tradition: in the Czech Republic, the holiday in honor of Cyril and Methodius began to be celebrated in 1349 year, in Bulgaria - in 1851.
In Ukraine, the name of Cyril and Methodius was the name of the first Ukrainian political organization in Kyiv - Cyril and Methodius Brotherhood (1845–1846), and celebrate the holiday at the state level with 2004 year.
Our common duty is not only to take care of the historical and cultural heritage, and to ensure the development of modern creative Ukrainian culture. So let's appreciate the word, let's take care of him, let's remember, that writing is one of the foundations of our national identity. Honoring the memory of the brothers-enlighteners Equal-to-the-Apostles Cyril and Methodius, let's remember our spiritual roots, let's be filled with special feelings for our native language, let's look for support in the word.
