
On the eve of Shevchenko Days, we received a gift from a sincere friend of the library, Shevchenko expert, Cand. honey. Science, Associate Professor of the Department of Theoretical Foundations of Olympic and Professional Sports Ihor Marcinkovskyi - journal “Numismatics and phalerology” (№ 1, 2025), in which his article was published “Badges depicting passenger ships with the name of Taras Shevchenko on board”.
In the article, the author examines the connections of Ukrainian poet-artist Taras Shevchenko with sailors, his use of sea terms and sailors' argotisms in his work, as well as the history of various types of vessels and ships with the name of Taras Shevchenko, ranging from steam shipbuilding to modern diesel-electric locomotives. The images of some of these ships on the badges of different years of publication are highlighted.
By the way, the author researched the history of ships with the name of Taras Shevchenko, and the first such vessel was a private river steam tug with a port of registration in Mykolaiv, built in 1888 year.
